Libertas is the Latin word for freedom, liberty, and independence; freedom of speech, frankness, or candor. When capitalized the name indicates the Roman personification or goddess of Liberty. Libertas is also a band that is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Libertas the band, holds to the above mentioned concepts as a mantra, both in their individual lives and also in their conjoined musical endeavours. They choose not to conform and follow many of the stereotypes and conventions commonly associated with heavy music and instead choose to follow their own path and adhere to their own set of standards. As a result they find inspiration and the spark of creativity from within a wide range of influences; from country to rap, from classical to rock, or from jazz to metal. Any or all of these influences may find a way into the music of Libertas, yet in the end it will always remain decidedly unique and original with Libertas' own twist added to the genre.
